Lyssa Berner

Lyssa is a vocalist whose artistry is rooted in a lifetime of performance, storytelling, and musical exploration. Raised in Northern Virginia, she discovered her love for the stage through musical theater, a passion that soon evolved into songwriting and live performance. By her early teens, she was fronting an original band and sharing her music in the intimate coffeehouse circuits of Fairfax and Loudoun County.

In the early 1990s, Lyssa’s voice found a home in the vibrant DC/Maryland music scene. She became a sought‑after vocalist, performing with jazz ensembles, agency dance bands, and supper clubs, earning recognition for her expressive tone and powerful vocal delivery. Her breakout moment came when she was invited to open at Washington, DC’s prestigious Warner Theater, delivering a stirring performance of “A Piece of Sky” that brought the audience to its feet and ignited a wave of opportunities throughout the region.

Lyssa’s talent reached national acclaim in 2001 when she won a major vocal competition among 30,000 contestants across the U.S. and Canada. Over five consecutive nights, she captivated judges with powerhouse renditions of Whitney Houston classics and ultimately secured first place in the Female Vocalist category with her signature performance of “A Piece of Sky.” Her victory led to an interview on Good Morning America, further cementing her place as a standout vocalist.

Her studio work includes recording background vocals for renowned Christian artist Paul Baloche on his 2011 album Same Love. A dedicated songwriter, Lyssa continues to develop and produce original music that reflects her depth, experience, and artistic evolution.

For the past two decades, Lyssa has devoted herself to raising her three musically gifted children while serving her community as a worship director, worship vocalist, choral director, and middle school music teacher. These roles enriched her artistry, allowing her to mentor young musicians and remain deeply connected to her musical roots.

Today, Lyssa returns to her first love—singing—with renewed purpose, creative fire, and a voice shaped by a lifetime of experience. Her journey reflects not only her talent, but her resilience, devotion, and unwavering passion for the art of music.
